What is League of Legends?
League of Legends is one of the world’s most popular video games, developed by Riot games.
Features a team-based competitive game mode based on strategy and outplaying opponents.
Due to its competitive nature, casual and competitive players can often experience negative interactions.
Research & Discovery
I began my qualitative research by surveying and targeting casual and professional League of Legends players. I discovered that 52.09% of players prioritized a positive mental headspace when playing the game.
After collecting my user data, I began to look at my competitors for inspiration. I took inspiration from the app Finch (and similar apps like Bloom), for it’s positive mental health, and habit forming features; a checklist of goals for users and a pet companion.
Sketching out my research
After collecting and studying my user research, completing my competitor analysis, and creating a problem statement, it was time to map out what my GGWP app would like visually.
I started with paper sketches and task flows to map out intuitive navigation for habit tracking. This hands-on phase allowed me to refine the core features and user journey before moving into digital design.
In Figma, I built digital wireframes to organize the app’s structure and layout. Here, I integrated "Pablo" the Poro to successfully merge functional self-care tools with a familiar League of Legends aesthetic.
Crafting the final design & prototype
My goal for the style-guide was to create a calm and retro look. As such, I paired my colors with the “TwitchyTV” typeface; based on the well-known game streaming platform, Twitch.tv.
Additionally, I created a successful prototype of the GGWP that shows the users goals for the day and their pet companion. I included multiple colored layouts of the landing screen to highlight the personalization aspect
Reflecting on GGWP
Given more time, I would…
Build out additional screens identified in my MoSCoW analysis, specifically focusing on a Night Mode. This feature is essential for late-night reflection sessions, providing a low-strain visual experience that aligns with the app’s goal of helping players wind down after a long day.
Conduct usability tests on the final prototype to validate the visual hierarchy and ensure the interface effectively reduces "tilt."
3. Expand the reward system for Pablo the Poro to include more interactive elements, encouraging consistent, long-term self-care habits.
